Councilperson Karen Lewis

October 25th, 2007

A recent Rochester Eccentric articles suggested that incumbent city councilperson Karen Lewis has a “big heart and good intentions”. Although she may have a “big heart” and “good intentions”, as your article suggests, I think it’s important to remember the following:

  • Karen is a tax-and-spend councilperson who supported a recent very quick shuffle of $250,000.00 to the Rochester Community House.
  • Karen supported a motion to keep the current city trash hauler rather than bid the contract publicly. This motion ultimately failed, and the city saved over $150,000.00 after accepting bids for the service.
  • Karen’s advocacy of the lawsuit filed against our own Older Persons Commission cost the city roughly $40,000.00 in attorney fees. Notwithstanding this financial outlay, the city lost the lawsuit and control of the Older Persons Commission remained in the hands of the organization itself.
  • Despite her public proclamations in support of our local police department, Karen privately advocates that the city continue to explore outsourcing the police services to the lowest bidder - the Oakland County Sheriff Department.

If lower taxes and a strong, local police department are goals you desire, Karen is not the best choice for your vote in November.

heritage.gifThe annual Rochester Heritage Festival is scheduled for this weekend. As usual, this will be a fun event for both young and old with plenty of things do to. Why not drop on over to the Rochester Heritage Festival website for further detail?

Please remember, though, that Memorial weekend is a time when we need to reflect on the tens of thousands of our military members who have died while protecting our freedom. We all owe everything we have today to these fallen heros. Please take some time this weekend to give thanks, in whatever way you choose, to these brave men and women.
